The Moonstone is a very satisfying mystery. The story traces the progress of a famous and revered yellow diamond and its mysterious disappearance after an 18th birthday dinner. The story is told from the first-person perspective of different characters, a device also used in The Woman in White, to good effect.
The protagonists are very likable and sometimes very amusing, as are some of the more minor characters. The plot contains a myriad of twists and turns that kept me guessing about who stole the diamond. At the same time, however, Collins allows some subtle hints that made my pondering most enjoyable.
I recommend The Moonstone to any reader who likes a good mystery as well as a quiet smile or two.

A Victorian oldie but a goodie. Twists and turns all the way through and I was surprise by whodunit. Fun read!

I know I shouldn't complain because I was literally using this as a sleep aid but my god we used to use so many words to say almost nothing
I see why it's interesting to read this, as a historical landmark of literature and such. However, I had a hard time keeping up with it. I feel like, even though there were parts that were funny, there was a lot of things that could have been entirely cut from the book and it wouldn't have harm the story much. I also felt that the many POV were sometimes a bit confusing or the switch wasn't necessary.
I don't know if it was because I read it through audiobook, but I had a hard time to pinpoint some of the characters at times. Or maybe because all the names of the male characters sounded the same to me. It didn't really hinder my ability to understand what was happening and who were the main characters.
I would say that the ending, as in what happends to the stone, is satisfying.

I enjoy reading history. For a mystery published in 1868, there is a great deal of history on display. In this story the language and life style of the people are captured. As the characters are presented, a mystery is unveiled. It’s a good story that was a surprise in the end. Like any good mystery, there will be romance, murder, tragedy, and suspense. But what intrigued me was the understanding that this book was released in sections in a magazine over a year. I can envision a family crowded around as someone reads aloud the next pages of the mystery. … It's an interesting story and worth the read when you want something off the beaten path.

This was one of the first proper detective novels I have read and I really enjoyed it. It took a while to get through and I didn't like some of the narrators. However, the different narratives made it a real puzzle to decipher what was going on and who was actually guilty.
It served as a really good introduction to the Victorian literature module I am doing - lots of different themes linked to Victorian passions and values. I was unsure if I would like the module or this book but I think I was wrong.
