I think the text is a super accessible way to learn more about the Holocaust, the effects it had on those who were prisoners during it, how they became prisoners, and who became prisoners. I really enjoyed the anecdotal biographical account this text used. Often, historical non-fiction can be really isolating due to the lack of visuals, or perhaps a lack of connection to the characters, but this text does a great job of ensuring that you understand the characters most of the time. It can be a bit jarring at times reading a non-fiction piece while using animals as the main characters, however, you get used to it quite quickly.
The breaking of the fourth wall in the second book in the second chapter seemed oddly out of place. It's not that it wasn't well written, or interesting, it was just an unexpected non-sequiter, (and if I'm recalling correctly, the only one in the text).
