This was my first audio book experience, and I sometimes struggled to separate the characters. Events proceed apace and the story got a whole lot wilder than I had anticipated at the start!

I received this e-book courtesy of its publisher for review purposes. Thank you!

This is a fast-paced serialised novel which deftly combines occasionally light tone and important, timely themes (of extinction, imperialism, global climate crisis and refugee crisis). The plot became a little bogged down towards the middle, but the excellent beginning and gripping conclusion are well worth the attention. The authors behind it - Yoon Ha Lee, Rivers Solomon, S.L Huang and Becky Chambers - have already made their names; though I didn't enjoy all their writing equally, and the cooperation necessarily meant that sometimes details that could have perhaps been written earlier appeared later on in the story, they clearly came up with a great idea for a world (I loved the details Rivers Solomon's chapter included in particular) and its central problem. The conclusion is both satisfying and clearly asking for a continuation - one I would gladly read. In fact, I have been thinking about it quite a bit since I finished reading: what will happen to these characters next? What brave new worlds will they find and build?

If there's one aspect of the novel that I didn't quite enjoy, it's the fact that some interactions with background characters have a slightly game-like quality to them: characters go to place X, encounter interchangeable people, accomplish objective Y, necessary for the plot. I think this would actually make a really good video game (or a non-video one, too, though I'm no expert there); still, it was not a real problem, just a minor detail that sometimes distracted me.

I didn't particularly fall in love with Niko or Asala, but that didn't really detract from the story of the world, and I think they will actually be very appealing to many readers - and the way in which gender diversity is present in the story in a direct and no-fanfare-necessary manner is also a definite plus.

Overall a decent read, but choppy and poorly edited in places. Almost gave up 75% of the way through because of poor pacing and some important events happening within one sentence of text. The ending is good, however leaves gaping openings for the second book which is not yet out.

Would not recommend to Becky Chambers fans.
