Because I am a big fan of each of these authors, I went into reading this book with very high expectations, and came away feeling 'meh', without quite being able to put my finger on it. That makes it very likely that format (audio-only?) and timing contributed to my disappointment.
There were parts that I did like- the complex politics of interstellar refugee camps was particularly good as were the planetary orbital travel mechanics.
It also could be that the episodic structure contributed to my frustration, affecting the pacing. I compare it to The Expanse, which is another recent "gritty" world that felt similar and was perhaps more successful, and I attribute that to having a more gripping central character than this one. Or just one that resonated with me more.
