This book is relatively slow and ponderous, so one you need to be in the mood for. I really enjoyed is pacing and found its descriptiveness really transporting and evocative. It gave me a window into a history and culture I didn't know a lot about and will stay with me. Hard to explain - but it is both simple and incredibly complex and layered all at once. Worth a read.

This is a really difficult book to rate. On the one hand, the long sentences and paragraphs strained my focus during most reading session in a way I've rarely experienced. On the other hand, Arudpragasam's prose is often gorgeous, and the the ideas he touches on--and the beautiful way he articulates them--are interesting and really thought provoking.

I would give it a 3 as a reading experience, but a 5 for the content.

Love love love! Would’ve been 5 stars if the romance was not included

I really wanted to like this, but it was too slow for me. Beautiful observations on life and love, but it kind of felt like a tiny bit of plot was constructed around some long-winded philosophical ruminations. I learned a bit about Sri Lankan history though.
