The Borrower

There are clever book and reading references in this novel, and that's why I gave it three stars. Otherwise, the book has an impossible premise and a very annoying main character.

Delightful. Simply delighful.

I loved this story, especially the message that books can save you.

The Borrower is charmingly written with a relatively novel plot. unfortunately, you will figure out the plot twist long before the narrator, so your part of the book that should be most exciting fails to thrill. Otherwise, a solid, fun story for book lovers.

There were moments where the main character annoyed the SNOT out of me with her anti Bush (W) comments and it makes me so sad that Christians are often portrayed as kooks or closed minded, self righteous prudes. That being said, the literary nerd loved all the references to authors, titles and characters throughout the story. I wish I knew more of the end of the story, but I understand why I don't.

Loved the book chat, but the story- not so much.

The Borrower is a book which creeps up on you with it's intelligence, wit, and heart. At its core, this is a tribute to books, to a deep love of reading: beyond that, Ms Makkai gives us a strong, if lost, narrator who truly makes you fall in love with our flawed, broken world.

This book isn't a page turner. You will not rush to finish it. But it's better that way. It sneaks up on you, and by the end, you will feel rather as if you have gone There and Back Again yourself. But most of all, you will be reminded that not all stories have idealistic endings... But perhaps not all stories need endings at all.
