What a wonderful book

You know, they can't all be winners. First books are hard.

I felt this story was incredibly underwhelming. I kept waiting for “the thing” to happen, for a reveal for the road trip, and I never got one.

I enjoyed this book, interesting story and great characters. I loved all the references to children's books. It was a book that reminded me why I love to read so much.

There are things I liked about this book, and things that I really didn't. Namely, I hated the fact that Lucy hates her job. As a children's librarian who loves her job, it was kind of hard to read about someone who didn't like it. But whatever. The eithics discussion was interesting, and I really liked the occasional style references to children's books like [b:The Very Hungry Caterpillar] and [b:Goodnight Moon].

I'm an hour and 37 minutes into The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai and so far I'm not actually enjoying it. It's about a librarian and a boy whose parents are severely limiting his reading and have put him in gay conversion therapy. It's just... the main character doesn't have much personality that's coming across. I don't like her. Books where I don't like the main character are just no fun.
