This book explores an idea that I can’t stop thinking about, who has the right to intervene and when, and how we project our own biases and perceptions on others. This is my favorite book by Makkai by far, even though it is definitely a product of its time in 2011.

I quite enjoyed all of the book references and Ian was a fun character however it didnt really feel like the plot went anywhere. We dont even know why Ian ran away from home in the first place beacause our protagonist never asks him why! she just gives in to the 10 year olds demands and acts like she is doing some sort of grand act of rebellion. side note Ian does act more like a 2nd/3rd grader than the 5th grader he aparently is and that did pull me out of the story at times. I guess it was more about the journey than the destination but it went by so slowly for me that I found myself not enjoying the prose and looking forward to the end.
This one sucked me in - devoured it in less than 24 hours.

This book was fine. I didn’t love it but it was enjoyable enough to read. I do **love** “The Great Believers” and “I Have Some Questions for You”. In a way it is inspiring to read her first book which felt.. fine… to me and know that she would eventually become an absolutely incredible writer. Shows the ability for someone to grow their craft. And that is inspiring. But yeah this book was fine.

Nie ma żadnej tajemnicy, żadnego napięcia, nie ma punktu zaczepienia, żeby się o cokolwiek martwić. Główna bohaterka jest głupia jak but, naiwna i wkurzająca. Rozwiązanie akcji to porażka po całej linii.

„nie mamy przed czym uciekać” zaczyna się jak opowieść o sile literatury i buncie wobec cenzury, ale szybko przekształca się w chaotyczną historię ucieczki, która nie prowadzi donikąd. bohaterka podejmuje decyzje, które początkowo wydają się wynikać z troski, ale z czasem stają się coraz bardziej niepokojące i trudne do usprawiedliwienia. makkai porusza ważne kwestie – granice ingerencji w cudze życie, odpowiedzialność dorosłych wobec dzieci, siłę przekonań – ale nie oferuje satysfakcjonujących odpowiedzi. nie potrafię wymienić stosownych zalet tej książki bo ich nie ma. w połowie fabuła traci impet, jest po prostu nudna, a podróż zamiast rozwoju przynosi stagnację i rozczarowujące zakończenie, które jest najzwyczajniej porażką: podobnie jak główna bohaterka. najsłabsza książka jaką w tym roku przeczytałam. nie traćcie czasu.
