For the librarians out there! On of the reasons I really liked this book was that I had no idea how it was going to end. That doesn't happen very often for me.

Wasn't sure how this book would end, and I was very skeptical. I thought it was less plot and more an excuse to get the author's politics across - none of which I disagree with from what I can tell. But the literary references were fun and drew me to the book. Also the writing near the end redeemed this book. Good enough, but not great.

Loved this book. Kept my attention and was sweet and funny and just a tiny bit sad - but hopeful.

Not much of a spoiler, so much, but...

My only question is why was the “henchman” driving a car exactly like Lucy’s? They never addressed it after his identity was revealed.

There are two things I loved about this book: 1) the hilarious heavily accented use (and mis-use) of American expressions by the Russian father ("[here in America] there is world class KGB to be had on the cheap!"); and 2) the use of phrasing techniques from clearly recognizable children's books (in a book about a children's librarian and a boy who loves to read). Sadly, the depressing weight of the knowledge that their "adventure" could not possibly end well seriously impaired my ability to maintain that love. Sure, it ended better than I thought would, but only because the resolution was not particularly plausible. As a reader of fantasy novels, I am certainly not anchored in realism, but don't ask me to suspend my disbelief at the end of a book whose plot is otherwise fairly mundane.

- cute adventure
- a book about readers is always fun
- dad's Russian mafia money came in handy a few too many times, imho
- very lighthearted considering the blurb mentions conversion therapy on a 10 year old
