Cute story even if the protagonist seems like a bit of an idiot.

Loved it.

I enjoyed this book. A librarian who isn’t sure of her place in the world tries to save a 10 year old. She then peels back the layers of good intentions and delves into what it means to see yourself as the hero and then see that isn’t always a clearcut role, both in her own life and through her learning parts of her dad’s past. I can easily imagine her and this child in some of the cities they travel through.

Though the plot of this wonderful little novel is completely ridiculous, unbelievable, and completely not-plausible, I loved it. The bookish quotes and references were perfect for my personality and fit into the story perfectly. I loved the characters, the slow-moving plot, and the emotional descriptions Makkai used. Fun!

Narration: I thought Bauer's voice was perfect for the book and for what I imagined Lucy to sound like. Young enough to still be naive without sounding like a little girl.

Would have been a solid 3 stars if the ending hadn't made me cry. 3.5.

Rebecca Makkai is one of my favorites. Her book ‘The Hundred-Year House’ is one of the top picks for me and one I often recommend to others. ‘The Borrower’ is her first novel and it is a magical one about the power of books to save people by escaping a painful reality, to serve as our most precious guides, and acting as a binding agent to share with those closest to us. I loved every minute of it.
