This novel brings Jane Seymour to life as we get insight into her upbringing and life before becoming Henry's queen. We get to see see her devotion to Katherine of Aragon, her dislike of Anne Boleyn and the reasoning why Henry was attracted to her. Additionally, we have some insight into Jane's personality, and it was interesting to see Anne's downfall from Jane's perspective. Finally, Alison Weir gives a detailed explanation of Jane's death came to be which was incredibly insightful. I enjoyed this book as Jane is brought to life as an actual woman rather than just the wife who died giving Henry an heir.

Note: I lost my notebook during the move so I don’t remember a lot of the trigger warnings. My apologies.

I am so disappointed in this book because I so badly wanted to love it, especially since I enjoyed the first two books of this series. I have always been interested in Jane Seymour. She was the one that I’m pretty sure Henry only loved. I obviously can’t prove that but that seems to be a prominent theme in the historical books I’ve read. So I thought that I would love this book but I had a lot of problems with this book and most of it has to do with the main character herself, Jane.

Jane was pretty insufferable. She truly had a holier-than-thou attitude. She would preach on and on about virtue and not cheating, judging Anne Boleyn and then she goes and does the exact same thing. Sure, you can’t exactly just say no to the King but still. I just don’t appreciate hypocrites. Not to mention, Jane was just boring. She would just go on and on if she made Henry even slightly upset. I’m talking pages of her just devastated if Henry raised his voice at her or if he didn’t visit one night. I just got old so quickly. I know she was young but man, it just got to be too much.

The whole book was truly boring. There was a lot of just fluff. The book could have easily been a couple hundred pages less and nothing would have been missed. It was just an incredibly slow-paced book. It took me so long to read this book. A lot of the problem was there were a lot of political issues. I think there was a war happening during this time. I honestly cannot even remember.

Overall, this was one of the weaker books of the series. I appreciate the research effort that Alison Weir put forth but since this is also a fiction book, I feel like there needs to be some enjoyment as well. I hope that the next book, which is about Anna of Kleves, is a lot better and hopefully she has a much better personality than Jane. From what I do know about her, I think she is going to be a lot more interesting.
