YA sports-adjacent soap opera with all the strife and wild drama of the genre. I would've gone crazy for this in 2002.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but reading this felt like watching an edgy teen drama from the naughties akin to Skins, except all the characters are in college instead of high school.

From the get-go, there is great tension surrounding Neil no matter where he goes. He’s traumatised, moody, and even after finishing this first book in the series, I still can’t grasp who he truly is. Seeing how slow he was to even take his contacts out, it’s evident that the found family aspect of the series is what’s going to lead him to eventually showing off who he truly is. And I love it. There’s something about how well he fits neatly into the Foxes like he was always meant to be there that makes me care a lot about the series and its characters, despite how unlikeable they all are. And I’m glad they’re unlikeable! That’s what makes me find them so interesting. Considering they’re all in a team that doubles as a halfway house, I’d find it really off-putting if any of them were normal or “well-adjusted”. The cast is colourful, and despite how many of them there are, I found that by the end of the book I was able to differentiate all of them from each other.

I absolutely love Exy. As a fictional sport, I think it is portrayed really well in the writing. I don’t know if it’s because I used to play both Hurling and Field Hockey, but I had no issue with visualising it. I also found the integration of the culture surrounding it being done really well, especially with regard to the American College culture aspect. The involvement of gangs being integral to Exy I also found it to not be too farfetched, especially considering both how violent it is and how young it is as an official sport in the universe.

A lot of what some of the characters do and say is in poor taste. I do find, however, that real sports athletes in locker rooms do not care about political correctness and most definitely do talk like the characters, if not worse. I grew up on the internet in the early 2010s, so the use of slurs didn’t really phase me all too much, but I can definitely see why they may be shocking to someone picking up the series for the first time. Of course, it would be ideal if none of the slurs were used, and I completely understand if someone had to put down the series because of it. The non-consensual kiss is also a big sore in the book itself, and I can see why so many people have issue with that particular chapter all together, combined with Neil being spiked by his teammates as a sort of hazing ritual.

It’s rough around the edges for sure, but I still found that I really enjoyed this book. I read it so fast that I practically inhaled it over a short period of time. It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed up late while repeating “just one more chapter” to myself.

I don’t know what it is but something about this trilogy just be hitting different. It’s unbelievably flawed but I have so much fun with the characters that I don’t care.
