I absolutely love how dark and surreal this book is about motherhood under capitalism. I think about this book constantly.

If it stuck the landing it would've been 5 stars but the ending was a little too perfect for the earlier themes.

I should have DNF’d after

she violently murdered her cat.

This book had no business being so boring with how graphic it was. It also had no business being so misogynistic with how “feminist” it claimed it was.

Despite the graphic elements, I actually found this quite a fun, satirical take on the feminist debate of the challenges of contemporary motherhood. I loved the art historical references alongside, which didn't feel forced or overall pretentious. Although, I don't know if I would read this book again and I can't decide if I would have preferred this as a short story or if I wanted more character development from a longer book. I do think I'll be thinking about this for a while though.

I didn't love every single moment, but this is a damn good book. Reads like one of those short stories from English class that you think about for the rest of your life, but longer and funnier. Felt like Kafka mixed with Neil Gaiman mixed with (cis) womanhood/motherhood anger.

Explicit description of the main character murdering her cat out of anger. Toddler son witnesses many acts of strangeness/animal cruelty and experiences occasional neglect/endangerment. He is portrayed as generally happy, and is never actually physically hurt. Body horror is descriptions of human-to-animal transformations.
