Where to even start? The plot line is great, you don't need to know anything about fantasy-type characters to enjoy this. Baldree does an excellent job of naturally slipping you into the story, especially with how it starts. I'm usually not for stories starting at the end of a journey but the anime Frieren and this book has changed my mind! Oohh and the characters, I love everyone,

i see this book recommended with the disclaimer that you don't have to be familiar with d&d. i don't think that's entirely true. i wouldn't say you've ever had to have played a game, but without familiarity with the genre and its conventions, you'll end up at least a little confused; things like rattkin are mentioned without description, and specific scenery descriptions are sparse.
pendry is my boy and my son and i hope he's doing great out there.
genuinely just a brilliantly soft and cozy read about the idealized version of a community coffee shop. it captures the coffee shop au trope and the things that draw people to it perfectly, and i'm thrilled to discover that the novel is opening the doors to a genre of works similar in tone.

The only thing that kind of annoyed me was the characters kept being referred to by their races. I understand the logic behind this from a writing perspective given the high fantasy setting, but it made Viv seem a little racist in a way that was clearly unintentional.

Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree is such a cosy fantasy novel that you could almost fall asleep to it! Almost...
Viv, a battle-hardened Orc, is giving up life with her crew, laying her sword Blackblood down, and opening a coffee shop in Thune, where no one has ever heard of the hot drink. She soon finds friends in hob carpenter Cal, succubus Tandri, who creates decorative signage, and ratkin Thimble, who is a master baker! However, her last battle with the Scalvert Queen, has one of her former crew plotting revenge as she tries to build her new life...
I borrowed a copy of this book from Taunton Library and listened to it on Spotify. It is narrated by the author, which I enjoyed. I read this for prompt 2, Bibliosmia: a smelly book, for the 52 Book Club Reading Challenge 2024.
