This book is really good for what it is. It’s mostly just a relaxing read, which is exactly what it’s supposed to be. The characters are nice and the friendships are easy and wholesome. I actually do like Viv a lot more than I expected to? Something about her stands out to me. Also, Thimble is so fucking adorable I might would recommend the book just for him.

There were quite a few things I liked about Legends & Lattes: the ensemble cast of characters, the 'cozy fantasy' feel, and the hints at wider world-building. I also appreciate that Baldree's written a female protagonist who doesn't feel in any way gender stereotyped or one-dimensional. I will certainly read Baldree's next book set in this universe, as I enjoyed this one. However, there were also some things that didn't quite work for me. I want more fantasy in my fantasy -- I feel like 95% of this story could've been the same without being fantasy at all (someone disillusioned with or in ethical conflict with their career goes off to start a coffee shop and makes some new friends...). I liked the characters but I wanted to learn more about them; many of the side characters don't have much in the way of backstory, and so can feel a little one-dimensional and more like collections of quirks than fully realized personalities.

This book was fantastic! I think the pacing got a bit wonky towards the end, but not enough to really detract from the overall experience. I loved how much of the book centered on the main character forming relationships and building a community of lovely people who work together to try to achieve our main character’s dream. Be forewarned: the descriptions of coffee and pastries in this book are so amazing that I am still craving cinnamon rolls with a latte about a week after I finished this book. Overall, the book was lovely, wholesome, and exactly what I needed to escape!

This is by far the best book in the cosy fantasy genre. I flew through this in a day. I really loved the characters and worldbuilding. I wouldn’t have expected a low stakes fantasy book to have worldbuilding but it’s clear that a fair amount attention was paid to that aspect. I think the pacing was great as well. This is such a great debut and I can’t wait to see what Baldree writes next.

**I was provided with an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**

CW: violence, blood, gore, injury, death, fire/fire injury, stalking, sexual harassment, alcohol

This wonderfully unique slice of life story set in a high fantasy world is a quick and perfectly cosy read. If you’ve been eyeing it and haven’t picked it up yet I couldn’t recommend it more for this time of year. The story follows an orc who sets out to run a coffee shop upon retiring from years of adventuring and bounty hunting and there has never been anything that has made me want to drink coffee so bad! Travis Baldree has truly worked some magic with this book as I’m someone who hates coffee 😅

The writing and pacing has a calmness to it that immediately immerses you in. The primary plot does have its moments of tension but is mostly low stakes and with a group of heart-warming characters at its core, a fascinatingly expansive wider world to discover and lots of mouth-watering baked treats to crave this book is nothing short of wholesome!
Final Rating – 4/5 Stars
