“Things don’t have to stay as what they started out as.”

➽ Legends and Lattes is the perfect cozy Fantasy!
It follows Viv, a retired Orc adventurer who is searching for a new perspective after quitting fighting. Because she has experienced the wonder of coffee, she is determined to open her own coffee shop ... only most people have never heard of the drink. I loved seeing Viv try to build her shop, attract customers and find employees. We've got Thimle, a talented baker and Tandri, a succubus and the new barista! There are so many descriptions of gorgeous pastries and delicious coffee, it was making me so hungry 😂

➽ I loved the character interactions as well! Viv and Tandri are slowly growing closer and I thought that their romance was sweet. It was also lovely seeing all of them work together at the coffee shop, you could really tell that they were a cool team! The book had the perfect balance of a lighthearted slice of life story, but also the consequences of Viv's past employment catching up with her. The only thing I didn't like were the numerous scene changes. The scenes were so short and the switch to yet another scene was so sudden and jarring. It made it hard to connect to the characters at time, as I would get really into an interaction, only for it to be cut short.

I was kind of skeptical of cozy literature, but this was great for setting the mood before my next DnD campaign (which started the day after I started reading this and makes me want to ask my DM if we can incorporate coffee into the campaign somehow). This was so cute. The only thing I hated was that it kept making me crave coffee and cinnamon rolls.

The beginning was a bit hard for me to read through. Just something about it was making me put down the book again after reading just a couple of paragraphs. It might just be the fact that I’m still trying to get out of a reading slump, though.

But after the first few chapters, holy hell. I couldn’t stop reading. It didn’t even feel like reading. The story flows so smoothly, it’s immersive, cozy, relatable, heart-warming, and has its gut-wrenching bits. The author’s language was sometimes hard for me to follow as I am not a native English speaker, but it’s beautiful nonetheless. Also the book definitely made me go on trips to bakeries & cafes more often.

I loved this, it's so nice!
only took me two days to read and I was almost sad that it finished.
I really liked most of the characters.

Just a delightful world with a loveable cast. I found myself endeared them with the turn of every page.

This book is really good for what it is. It’s mostly just a relaxing read, which is exactly what it’s supposed to be. The characters are nice and the friendships are easy and wholesome. I actually do like Viv a lot more than I expected to? Something about her stands out to me. Also, Thimble is so fucking adorable I might would recommend the book just for him.

There were quite a few things I liked about Legends & Lattes: the ensemble cast of characters, the 'cozy fantasy' feel, and the hints at wider world-building. I also appreciate that Baldree's written a female protagonist who doesn't feel in any way gender stereotyped or one-dimensional. I will certainly read Baldree's next book set in this universe, as I enjoyed this one. However, there were also some things that didn't quite work for me. I want more fantasy in my fantasy -- I feel like 95% of this story could've been the same without being fantasy at all (someone disillusioned with or in ethical conflict with their career goes off to start a coffee shop and makes some new friends...). I liked the characters but I wanted to learn more about them; many of the side characters don't have much in the way of backstory, and so can feel a little one-dimensional and more like collections of quirks than fully realized personalities.
