I can't do it. It's well written but an absolute slog to get through. I only persisted since it had such a strong start in the hopes that it would amount to... something. I gave it an honest try. I just can't. I might be more tolerant if it had more focus on race relations and/or the murder but I just couldn't bring myself to connect with most of the characters. Switching to audio might allow me to get through it.

Had the painful realization that I didn't care about what was happening. Tartt attempts to outdo Stephen King in her unnecessary slurs (N, F, and R-slurs abound), and the story amounts to so little

I read both of Donna Tartts other novels this year and enjoyed both of them but I could not get into this one. I had a very hard time with it as seeing the n word written by a white lady so many times was jarring and the pretty blatant prejudice against lower class with bad grammatical dialogue and descriptions of their bodies. I am not sure I will pick it back up to finish the story but most likely I’ll look up the ending and be done with it.

Frequent use of racial slurs and stereotypes against African-American people.
