“Death arrived at twilight” What an insane opening line to a book. My interest was immediately piqued, and it just continued to deliver over and over. Kiva was such a well written character with just the right amount of mystery to her, and a compelling backstory to make her actions make sense. I loved her character so much. The story itself kept me on the edge of my seat, and the ending had me in absolute chock, hand over my mouth and tears running. It tied the story together so well, while still making me want to get the second book right at this moment. The other characters were so fleshed out and real, and the attention to detail even in the minor characters and events were great. Tipp is my all time favorite child in any story ever, I will kill for him. My only tiny little bit of critisism is that some dialouges were a liiiiitle drawn out and had me almost getting frustrated at them for being too slow, but it only happened like twice and didn’t really bother me that much, it just keeps it from reaching that 5 star mark just slightly. It’s such a great book and I’d really recommend it.

I had high hopes for this book because I love Noni’s other series but was disappointed. All tell, no show. I was not particularly invested in the story and felt that the trials by ordeal plot-line lacked tension because it was obvious she would survive all four. The other plot lines and twists like
Tipp’s five-page-long stomach bug, Jaren and Kiva’s true identities, the wardens poison, her dads death by said poison, the deadly riot at the end of the book and Tilda’s brief moments of consciousness and then later death
were not enough to bring any interest or tension to the book in my opinion. I also think the dialogue felt unnatural and stilted, specifically when talking about self harm and drug abuse. “The prison healer” felt like Noni had mashed together every YA fantasy trope she could and called it a day. Kiva and Jaren’s romance was bland and no of the characters were very memorable. I had to skim read the further I went on because how boring this book became by the end was very frustrating. Overall, not the worst thing I’d ever read but I will probably not bother to pick up the next two in the series.

At first when I found out that this book is a part of a series, I was contemplating whether I want to continue or not since I felt like I needed a break after just finishing the Shatter Me series, but boyy I'm so glad I kept going. By far, this book is at the top of my 5 star list. It is so unbelievably good!! I was so deep into this book on another level. The writing literally makes me feel like I'm truly there and truly seeing what's happening. I felt so connected to the characters even the side characters. The plot, the characters, the twist and the magic are written so impeccably well. The writing is just immaculate and beyond what I have previously enjoyed. And the twist had me absolutely speechless. I truly adore this.

"You have the prettiest eyes I've ever seen.
Like sunlight on the sea."

*read this when i was big on romance so don't listen to me! this is 5 stars if you don't care about much romance*

the prologue was chefs kiss, so captivating, first couple of chapters- perfection.

one of the main reasons i didn't love this was because it dragged on way longer than it should have. i mean there was absolutely no need for 80% of the book to be about her finding the reason everyone was getting sick & dropping like flies. I DON'T CARE, i genuinely could not care less, cus she went into extreme detail during the whole process and i mean literally 80% of the damn book was about her wondering why and how it was happening. like girly i don't wanna know anymore let them die. give me some romance.

i'm just the type of person who can't read/enjoy a book without romance, i don't want 2% romance and 98% plot. NO make it 50/50 or some shit, just give me romance please
