New Wuzburgs best-kept secret is the watcher and weaver communities, however, the secret may just be out of the bag, thanks to some unexpected visitors.
In the sequel to Haven, Havoc sees the Watcher community trying to break free from the tight restrictions of the weaver community. This fight for independence serves as the core for the general unrest that turns these two communities upside down.
The icing on the cake for me is the characters. Sometimes, they sound like lost kids navigating a series of unfortunate events which added authenticity to the plotline. I appreciated that the author respected the ages written in the novel and matched their actions to suit
Freddie, soon to be alpha has her hands full with a blast from the past and a surprise twist is sent her way in the form of a marriage agreement set before her birth. I liked that Freddie always thinks about those around her before herself, which is such a great trait for an incoming alpha.
Rain, oh Rain, this guy cannot catch a break, just when he thought he got his happily ever after and he could "run-off" into the sunset with his girl, reality serves a solid NOPE.
My absolute favorite is Petra, she truly has grown so much from the first book and is finally embracing the weird. As her powers seem to amplify and the odds continue to stack against her, she begins to understand the concept of friendship and having people to rely on which was touching.
It would be remiss of me not to mention Grant and his iron-clad loyalty, this guy is solid af- and honestly, I would want some like Grant looking out and loving me with this sincere intensity.
As situations start unfolding, the drama escalates and our beloved characters are fighting for their lives without really knowing the rules. Can Freddie do whatever it takes to be alpha of her pack, even if it means giving up Rain? Or will she break the binding agreement for the sake of love?
Sacrifices must be made, both of the heart and the spirit.
Spoiler- the smut is very minimal, as soon as it escalates the writer drifts off which was slightly frustrating for me because if you are building it up you better deliver!

04-05: 'Havoc' is book two in the Haven series by Mary Lindsey, a YA paranormal romance where the balance between wolf shifters and witches has never been equal. While the shifters are looking to achieve their freedom from the dominance of the witches, a group that controls everything they do.. right down to who they can pair up with, others want to see them kept in their place.
Though I didn't read the first book, this one was very easy to pick up with. Pertinent major events from the debut title, Haven, were referenced and explained in passing, so that everything still made sense.
Pacing is very solid throughout the story, plenty of action and emotional drama to keep the reader turning pages, making it a quick read. In fact, most of the story is just really well-executed. My one minor complaint is the conclusion is done in a quick information dump.. like the author didn't know a better way to convey all the little details she'd held onto. Almost all of it was delivered by the same character in a conversation with another.. and the effect was if felt like sort of a Scooby Doo ending, which is sad.. because the book deserved better.
That one small thing aside, I really enjoyed the story. I loved Rain, who is exactly my type of character. His background was unpleasant, but he's loyal and loving.. desperate to hang onto the bit of happiness he's found. The rest of the group is interesting as well.. Merrick, Petra, and Freddie are all pretty richly textured, likeable people.. and the dynamic with Grant is amusing in spots.
The author definitely tried to drop hints with the intention the reader would either overlook them or forget them, so they'd have that moment later where they realized they should have spotted the anomaly.. but they weren't very subtle. Rather than dropping a clue, sometimes Lindsey would outline the entire area with them before moving on.. but really that's just lack of experience where some finesse would have gone farther to achieving her goal.
As with all skills though, we only get better with time.. and with so few constructive criticisms to be stated, I look forward to seeing more work from her in the future. If you like underdog stories (no pun intended) and paranormal worlds, this one is probably for you.

Rain is now a Watcher, and is determined to cling to the bit of happiness and sense of community he’s found in New Wurzburg with Freddie, the alpha apparent. Rain is head over heels in love with Freddie, and I’ll admit, sometimes (a lot of the time, actually) their relationship comes off as one-sided (could be just because these books are Rain’s POV explicitly) however, Freddie’s primary way of showing her feelings are only physical, and her communication style is to still harbor secrets. Rain has to fight constantly to keep Freddie in check, and while her “Beastly” nature is a fine trope, it’s exhausting to read the same character plot chapter after chapter.
The best part of this series is the theme of power and how it corrupts. Every leader begins their journey and tenure with progress and change and the betterment of their people at the forefront. But things change.
Ultimately, fans of paranormal romance will find this read quick, easy, and mostly enjoyable. The cover art is brilliant and I’ll for sure pick up a copy for my students as this genre is on the uptick again.
