It’s been a while since I have read anything fantasy that doesn’t involve fae or vampires and such, but is rather based in a sort of alternate historical reality within our own world. The Wood by Terry Madden was exactly this, a fantastical world set within our history and it ticked off all the marks for being a great engaging fantasy that enthralled me.
Dorica is a slave that lives in a city on the outskirts of a magical forest that sprung up from the blood and bones of a tribe that fought in the Trojan war. None can venture into these woods without perishing due to a curse, but Dorica is an exception.
She constantly goes into the woods to collect saplings for her master to make weapons with, and returns unscathed. She is the only person who can do so. One day an old man is admiring her masters weaponry and specifically the wood which he used to make it. He inquires if it is from the enchanted forest, and if so wishes to know how he acquired it.
The old man learns that Dorica is the one who enters the forest and collects the wood, and thus wishes to hire her to find a treasure within the accursed forest for him. Of course her master refuses this, not wishing to rid himself of the slave who keeps his business lucrative.
Despite his reluctance the stars align to where Dorica runs away into the forest and meets with the old man. Here she learns many secrets, and the truth about this treasure he wishes to find.
It is a fun fantastical story with beautiful imagery and characters. The writing was absolutely masterful, and this author has a knack for describing things so vividly that I can envision everything quite easily. Its only downfall in my opinion is that it’s too short, and I want to read more about Dorica and this enchanted forest.
I will definitely check out the Three Wells Series by Terry to satiate this need of more from this universe. I highly recommend this short read to any lovers of fantasy.
