not very good lol

the first 50 pages were so promising and then the rest of the book was just cliche after overused cliche.

This is the closest to an Ian Fleming Bond novel I've read in some time. It helps that the book is set in the fifties, and tells of Bond's ascent to the "00" section. Horowitz gives us classic Fleming description, the exotic flavor of an observant traveler.

A great Bond novel? No. But a very good one, and with a few playful elements, such as showing us where Bond got the idea for his famous alcohol order: "Shaken, not stirred." And like the best Bond, there's even a gambling scene in a casino.

I've never read a James Bond before, so I'm not sure how to compare this to an Ian Fleming. I enjoyed it a lot and it was very Bond-esque.

A fun bit of Bond, it just occasionally fell too deep into the traps of the prequel, creating groan inducing references to the future of the character. But, for the most part it succeeded in doing what it was meant to do. Give us more Flemingesque Bond.

An enjoyable read that goes fast and doesn’t contains too many sidetracks. Could be a fun movie.

I will preface by saying that I have not read any of the Ian Fleming books but am a huge fan of the movies. I’ve seen them all, at least once. I was frustrated in this book that Bond came across as so uncertain and without his standard bravado but also know it could be that he was new to the job. The middle of the book was 3 stars for me but the ending was really good so I upped my review to 4 stars.

More like a 3.5... Not bad. Certainly full of the typical Bond Trappings. A good 'check your mind at the door' read. Just didn't have the strongest plot... And a villain that, to me, brings to mind Barney the Purple dinosaur cast in Jurassic World... Not. Quite. There....
