Love it when I have both the time, and desire, to read a whole book in a single day. I couldn't put this one down! And I do love me a beach vacation.... :-)

I like this. I honestly thought it'd be a novel like the Burgess Boys (Which I joked with a friend because his name is Burgess). But turned out it's an anthology. If I can call it that way.
It's like a compilation of vignettes. Each stories are related but not necessarily connected in a way. Each can stand alone or taken into another compilation about how mundane life is. LOL. I think that's why I like this so much. The stories show how life can be both mundane and interesting at the same time.
I haven't watch the series, but I'm sure looking forward to watch it some time soon.

If this book had been told from just Olive's point of view I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. I would have even liked it better if it was from the perspective of just a few characters. I hated that there were soooo many characters. The book is titled Olive Kitteridge so I wanted it to be more with her. Yes, every character tied to her but there were stories she was barely a part of. That is what I did not particularly like in this book.

What I DID like was the way Strout developed Olive. She is this grouchy old woman who never thinks she does anything wrong and who has no filter. She is oblivious to how this affects people, particularly her husband and her son. I really felt for Olive. She truly didn't know what she did wrong. People should have told her sooner, not when she was old. People tend to be set in their ways by then.

I liked Henry too. He was a good character. A good man. Christopher annoyed me. His wives annoyed me. Now I sound like Olive.

I feel that Strout was also spot on with marriage. Marriage is hard work and I imagine it only gets harder as you get older. This was a good picture of marriage at its best and at its worst.

Overall, writing was excellent. Character building was excellent. Imagery and story-telling were spot on. What kept this from being 4 stars was just the part where there were too many different perspectives of different characters that I felt didn't need to be there. For this reason, I will likely never read this book again but I would recommend that you read it at least once.

Davvero, davvero carino.

parts of this were so sweet, but so much of it kind of reeked of 2008 in a way i don’t love. really unnecessary and random 9/11 call outs at the end accompanied by islamophobia, racism, and xenophobia which really threw me for a loop. also a touch of homophobia right in the last chapter, just for shits i guess? concept was lovely and quite well executed.
