don’t like the main character or writing style especially the time/character changes l
It's hard to improve on the other favorable reviews, but I loved this book (especially the way it ended!) and would highly recommend it. Olive Kitteridge is certainly not the most likable of characters, but she is so recognizable, particularly for women of her generation. And she's only the most memorable of the book's many memorable characters (Angie the piano player was heartbreaking). This is the first book of Elizabeth Strout's that I have read, and I understand that it's her best, but I'm now motivated to read all her work. She has such a wonderful understanding of the human heart.

Beautifully written, but this is really more a series of related short stories than a novel - it would have helped to go in knowing that. And the next to the last chapter had nothing to do with the others, or did I miss the connection?
I’m not sure why but the short story format did not work for me. Second half was more interesting. It’s not a reflection of Strout’s beautiful and nuanced prose. I very much enjoyed the Lucy Barton books, which aren’t linear novels either. Maybe good book, wrong time?
