look I know…I know this is an old ass book but. he’s borderline ephebophilic and also a little insane? weird power imbalance & creepy w the wife in the attic stuff.
it’s a good thriller novel bc scary…but to consider it a romance?

Astonishing that this is billed as a romance. The colonialist bent was equally unwelcome.

Had no idea what this would be about, but considering there is a Hollywood movie coming out this month based on the book, I thought I should finally give it a shot.

I was thoroughly disappointed, though. I am not drawn towards books that drone on and on and where nothing ever really happens, such as the case with Jane Eyre. Although other classical authors (such as Tolstoy, for example) may drone on and on about all the minute details, there is still an obvious plot. Maybe I am being unfair, but if this book were to be published in 2011, it would receive horrendous reviews. I believe it is only considered an esteemed novel because it is a classic, not because it is brilliant.

NB: I still plan on seeing the movie at some point though, just to see what direction the film editors took. I love to see classic stories played out into modern day society, such as 10 Things I Hate About You.

‘my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wraps my existence about you’

i am in love with charlotte brontë’s writing. for the whole 500 pages the plot never felt stale, which is hard to achieve. this book is probably up there as one of my favourite classics :)
