I wanted there to be a little more to this, but that may just come of being an adult. I also thought it was a bit strange that the book made a point of Effie's poetry/language being different due to her use of ASL but most of the verse in the book is, for lack of a better word, normal? Again might be a thing where the target audience might not track with her "ASL poetry" for an entire book. I think that would have been much more interesting, though.

Deer Run Home was an emotional, vulnerable, and sweet story about Effie, the main character. Written in verse, it takes readers through a rollercoaster of emotions and keeps readers wondering what happened to Effie and what is to come for her.

Equal parts touching and devastating. Only wish it were longer.

What an amazing little book.  It made me cry, but I'm glad I read it.

This is a very emotional book. I loved Effie’s character and was surprised to see the problems with her home life written in a middle grade novel. Please check the content warnings if you are planning on reading this because it might be difficult. I do think the difficult content was handled in an age appropriate way, but I do think knowing it’s there is helpful for the conversations you might need to be ready for.
