Loved this paranormal book. Why? It is smart.
Our main character - MacKayla Lane (Mac for short) is a spunky girl of 22 years. She is smart - maybe not the smart in academics but the smart where she catches on quickly and makes good decisions. She evolves from a person who was happy with the simple things - sunning, dressing up (the grooming yuck that some women get into heavily...manicures,pedicures, makeup and such) and working a job as a bartender to one with a special gift that learns to utilize the gift with the help of Barrons.
This book read more like a mystery to me than a flat out paranormal story. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading from Mac's perspective. I like Barrons but also am very leery of him just as Mac is leery of him. Even so, I am rather curious about Barrons...there is more going on with him. There are secrets.
V'Lan...what is up with him. Ok, the obvious is there with him but there is more...I just know it.

So.. This is a hard review for me to write. While I enjoyed reading it, and tore through it pretty quickly, it didn't really connect with me anywhere.
Mac is a nice enough character. She's a bit naive, going to Ireland to solve her sister's murder by herself because nobody can help her, and she rolls right into the problems. She's introduced to the world of Fae in record speed and soon she finds herself in the middle of finding an ancient book while she has to battle off the dark fae. One night she stumbles upon a bookstore owned by Jericho Barrons, and meets its owner. Cue the real start of the plot of this book.
I'm just going to put it out there: Jericho Barrons is an ass. I hate him. He's a poor excuse of a man and I can't stand him. He's bloody annoying in about three quarters of the book and if he was real, I'd have punched him in the face, tall as he might be. He's up there with Bill Compton from the Sookie Stackhouse books in terms of most-hated character.
Having said that, I liked that the story is told as if Mac tells the story afterwards. I liked her flashbacks, her pondering, her reflection on what had happened and I'm quite curious what comes next. I'd say I hope there is less Barrons in it, but I think that's wasted energy.
Darkfever set up nicely for the rest of the series, mapping out Dublin and creating a base for the storyline in the next books. I read the book fairly quickly, flipping the pages to find out more, and I'm sure that Moning will deliver that and more again in the sequel.

Surprisingly addicting!
As a fan of urban fantasy/paranormal, I was entrapped with Mac's world as she finds her sister's killer. With few corny scenarios, the author pulled it off. I was addicted and pulled into the story. I am now reading book 2 of the series.

I have been hearing about the fever series and Barrons for ages now, and I finally caved and read it. I liked the book overall but I thought Barrons was a jerk throughout most of the book. In the end he redeemed himself a bit, but otherwise, seriously why is he such a jerk? I feel like Mac doesn't even really like him, now V'lane seemed pretty intense, and even thought he was a jerk also he seemed interested, which is more than Barrons can say...yes Barrons is more of a 'gentleman' if you can call him that, but still so cold that what is up with him and Fio? I will read on to see if he changes my mind, but good grief! :) I give it a 4.5 rating.
