Do you like joy? Read this book. Pretty well every page has some sentence to smile over, and every chapter at least a snort. I just flipped to 5 random pages and found the following:

...[dwarf] spat on the ground, which didn't take long on account of its closeness.

[as a coach is attacked] The coachman had already made a lightning comparison between current job conditions and his rates of pay and had vanished...

...with the gusto of someone who'd discovered that the instrument didn't just have three keyboards but a whole range of special acoustic effects.

...two theories... one put forward... based on observational evidence... one... based on what might tentatively be called the truth of the heart...

As if it wasn't enough to be entertaining and present a nontrivial murder mystery, this book also has a lot to say about gun control and monarchy, and does so in a way so matter-of-fact, despite the fantastical setting, that its positions feel sensible as well as noble.

The characters also remain a joy. With less Vimes and more Carrot this time around, the Patrician and his unexpected depth have slunk into my personal favourite spot. However, I couldn't help but notice that Sybil's wedding preparations took her almost entirely off-screen and that our new token woman, Angua, has a plot that revolves around romance, so I hope the ladies get to step back on the page in their own right next go around. The new additions of a dwarf (Cuddy) and a troll (Detritus) to the ranks add both humour and dignity, and the joke that is Nobby stays fresh with a few new splashes of horrid backstory.

Excellent books for cleansing the palette, and to laugh just enough to discourage people from sitting next to you on public transport.

Loved this even more than I loved reading “Guards, Guards.” The characters were more developed and the classic Terry Pratchett humor is always a delight to read.
