I really liked this book. The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney movies, and I am a sucker for a mafia romance. I loved seeing the "characters" as their individuals and learning about them as the book went on. I felt everyone had their tells, their personalities, and their traits that were easily tellable. That was one of the negative viewpoints I had, I felt like all the plot twists were to easily guessed. Like what happened at the beginning had to be important for us to get the entire scene laid out, of course X betrayed X for X. Idk to me it was a bit obvious.
I really like Venesa. I loved her personality and resonated with wanting to make someone proud. I liked Enzo and his protective nature and swagger. It did, however, take me way too long to realize that Fisher was based on Flounder. I always thought he was based on Flotsam. Anyway, I did like a lot of the side characters (Scotty was definitely my favorite). The plot was capturing and fun until the end. I felt like the end New York stuff was delved out, it was collective, it was more orderly. I felt like the end South Carolina stuff was just chaotic and not really conclusive to me. Overall, I did really like the book.

Oh the forbidden love. Oh the yearning. In the sinking ships of life this was a sole survivor shipwreck.
This was my first date my sibling's/friend's/family's fiancée forbidden love trope and am I ever glad I waited for Emily to break that seal the way she sold this particular tragedy to me. I was anxious almost the whole time.
There is little I love more than when we have bad guys dripping around all the edges, but then he is somehow badder. Effortless, flawless, the way this read was swimming in drama was everything I came for when I pick up an Emily book.
Please also note my dear reader friends, if you love an audiobook with a commitment to the cause you might just want to step this way.

I purchased this book as soon as it hit my local store. I was excited and I already knew how McIntire's books go. I was especially anticipating this one because I love a good Little Mermaid retelling.
The book starts with a scene similar to when Ariel brought a half dead Eric back to shore and saved him, but it's Venesa finding Enzo already half dead washed up on some rocks. Against her better judgement she saves him, but her cousin takes the credit and ends up engaged to him.
Alas, Enzo and Venesa have an undeniable, fiery, and all consuming insta-lust that I wasn't a huge fan of. There wasn't really a foundation for their relationship other than the lust. It also escalated way too fast for me. The man was engaged to someone else, and that didn't deter him in the slightest.
One thing I look for in books is character development and I don't think either character did much. On top of that, Venesa's personality did a complete 180 the more she hung out with Enzo to the point where it didn't feel right. Almost like two different personalities or two different characters lived in Venesa's head.
This book felt a lot like Wretched. The characters also felt very similar. Very strong, smart women that flip and become mushy once they meet Mr. Mafia Man.
In saying all that, I did read this book in very few sittings. It was fast paced and kept my attention easily. I enjoy McIntire's books because they get right into the action and romance. There were plenty of high tension scenes and I like how she retold the fairy tale.
Overall, a solid read.

Not anything too special I would say. If the premise interests you, I would recommend you read it. I’ve read too many others similar to this one that I’m not super impressed. I did like that it didn’t feel like the author pulled any punches in making the FMC a bad guy. She’s not evil, but she’s not just pretending to be bad for the sake of the book.
