AUDIOBOOK. The little mermaid if Ariel was a spoiled brat and Ursula is the real heroine of the story and rescues the prince. I really enjoyed the allusions to the original children’s story while incorporating the mafia theme. Might be my favorite of the Never After series.

In this life I will love this book out loud.

I picked up this book as I have read all the other books in the Never After series and this book delivered. I love the concepts of these books where it twists the stories of well-known fairytales. This one based on the Little Mermaid.

I felt like this book delivered in what it set out to do.

Plot & Pacing:
The story was engaging, was filled with tension for the first half of the book. Where we got to know the character dynamic. I found it difficult to put the book down in the last half of the book.

Characters:
The story followed the story between Venesa and Enzo, Enzo who is a mafia heir is promised to be married to Aria (Venesa’s Cousin). Vanesa works for her Uncle as a contracted torturer/killer, with her own special brand of torture. There is a lot of tension between these two characters which I was all here for. I loved the other characters, like Fisher and Bas (nod to Flounder and Sebastian). Venesa was a strong FMC and I loved her and the bisexual representation.

Writing Style & Structure:
I find the use of descriptions of sea style descriptions great in this book, like using the term inky, the pets she has, the lair, liking witchcraft.

Themes & Tone:
Emily’s main characters always seems to have a heavy dose of childhood and continued trauma, which this book continued. There was spice, but I felt like the tension delivered more than the spice.

Standout Moments:
“In a different life…” I pause, emotion suddenly clogging my throat. “I’d love you out loud.”

Personal Impact:
It wasn’t a book that made me emotional but it was a page-turner, I devoured this book.

The book of the year goes to…Hexed!

This was a long anticipated read and it was so worth the wait. This book was perfect! Venesa is a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need a man and I’m loving it. She definitely has her demons and a past that still affects her but all she wants is someone to be proud of her and love her. Enzo is a smooth talker, son of a mob boss. Enzo also has demons and a past that affects him. Venesa and Enzo can feel a pull when they meet and it only gets stronger the more they’re near each other. They have such powerful chemistry and i think they both feel connected both having not so good childhoods. I’m definitely a fan of a strong female type of character and Venesa is one powerful woman. I loved everything in this book and it will be hard to beat. Also, I think this book came out at the perfect time given what is going on in the world. I’m sad that this series is over but this series definitely ended is a bang. I will forever love this series and I will forever love Emily McIntire.

A solid read and strong end to the Never After series. The Mafia aspect was entertaining and really added the “mine” vibes. The way Enzo yearns for Venesa is *chef’s kiss* and he will literally do anything for her. Love that they are both morally grey characters and would kill or torture anyone for each other. Spice is decent. It didn’t hit as well for me, but there’s always a moment or two that are just sensational. The yearning and everything leading up did it more for me. Would definitely recommend.

Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this retelling as much as the others. My absolute favorite so far has been crossed. The forbidden romance and the sexual tension was very palpable in crossed. However, I found for this book, everything fell into place a bit too easily, and there were a bit too many betrayals for it to really be taken seriously. Other than some of the characters names, this retelling didn’t quite hit the mark in terms of their businesses and the rivalries; it didn’t flow as well as say the lost boy gang from hooked or the priest story line from crossed. It’s an okay read.
