4 stars!

Okay, I jumped at the chance of reading this book because when I read the synopsis, I saw that there were DRAGONS in this book! Oh man, anyone who knows me knows how much I love dragons! Like, I have a serious love for them! Also, this book set in the Medieval era was another HUGE plus for me.

This book did live up to my expectations! I loved the characters of Xavian (awesome name, right!?) and Afina. Oh man...Xavian was a tortured hero and even though he did the, "why me?...she deserves better.." I still really liked him and his growth as a man. AFINA!! Oh man...I loved her right off the bat. She started off a mother who did what ever she could to take care of little Sabine then she discovered her magic and oh man...SHE GREW SO MUCH!! Whoa.... like I love how even though she had her knight in shining armour, she didn't need him!

The reason it's not getting that 5th star is because there were some loose ends that were not tied up as well as some minor insta-love going on that I didn't like. But LOVED this book a ton and I can't wait to read Henric's story!

good start to a series. Lots of action and once you get into it some good loving. Well developed world and characters with a good solid plot.

Audio: I liked the narrator quite a bit.

Loved it strong characters and strong female lead who isn't temporarily strong a brilliant read

3.5 stars.

Assassin Xavian Ramir was sent his assassin order leader Halal to capture Afina Lazar and return her to warlord Vladimir Barbu.

Afina is the high priestess and her endorsement (and marriage) is necessary in order for Barbu to retain control of the conquered Transylvania.

As Xavian captures Afina and begins his journey to return her, he is surprised that she isn't what he thought she would be. First of all, she was running with her daughter. Second, she is a smart, observant and brave woman. As he gets to know her, he begins to question why Barbu is trying to force Afina into a union and he also begins to question his latest assignment.

Of course, they begin to develop feelings for each other. Afina possesses magic that she isn't sure how to use. But the magic grew once Xavian kissed her. Xavian decides he cannot and will not hand over Afina, not with their bond growing so strong. But that means disobedience to his assassin order as well as war with Barbu.
Now Xavian & Afina are being hunted and they have to find a way escape Halal and an angry warload.

I felt like a lot was going on and thrown in this book. It was just a lot. I didn't think the Dragon's made that much of a difference to my enjoyment either.

But I loved Xavian and Afina. Both were warriors who cared about others and would willing sacrifice themselves for the benefit for others. Their love was magically and together they were stronger. I didn't quite understand Halal's reasons for being a bad guy, but I assume we will see more in book 2.

Overall, it was an okay beginning to the series.

I was mostly just waiting for this book to be over the whole time. :( I think I might have not been in the right frame of mind for it.

This was pretty interesting in terms of complex world and plot development. However, I found the ending rather rushed, and I really wanted to know more about the heroine's mother and her motivations. Maybe those will come up in the next book.

I wish they had a 4.5 because that's how I would rate this book. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the rest of the series
