I guess I didn't expect this to be both historical fiction and fantasy. I think I would have preferred just historical fiction. It's a clever idea to tell the story of Admiral Byrd's expedition from the point of view of one of the cows who went with him. But I don't like it when that cow is putting on an uddermuff that Georgetta the pig knitted for her and teaching the cowherd to do the hoochy-coochy when she gets bored during the long South Pole winter. (The idea of an uddermuff for a cow is fun, but how can Emmadine the cow put it on herself? And that's not even dealing with the fact that it was supposedly knit by a pig!) I've enjoyed books that are historical-fiction and fantasy combined, but in this case, the fantasy aspects felt out of place. Other than that, I thought it was a nice story with cute illustrations that fit both the historical fiction and fantasy aspects of the story.
