Marilynne Robinson is a very skilled author who writes beautiful books and Lila is certainly one of her best works. The way Robinson plumbs the human spirit makes her one of my favorite contemporary authors. Highly recommend this book.

This afternoon the sight of cherry trees blooming against a heavily overcast sky after a sudden rainstorm just about took my breath away. It was such a simple, beautiful moment, and it made me ache. That tiny, ordinary moment captured a bit of what it feels like to read Marilynne Robinson’s prose, and this was definitely true of her latest novel. Had I read this on its own without the context of Gilead and Home, I might have given this four stars, but all three Gilead novels just make the others even more beautiful. I don’t even know how to write about them. Reading all three have them has just been a completely exquisite experience for me. They are, somehow, the truest books I’ve ever read -- not the happiest, but they do make me so grateful just to be in the world and experience being a messy human being in need of a little grace.
Missed that this was series.... starting at the beginning b/c I really enjoyed this story.
I think this may be one of the most beautiful books I've ever read.
There isn’t a lot I can say about this series cap that would do it justice. Reading it is as close as I’ve come to understanding what Grace is.

I loved this book. It was an emotional self-discovery journey that included a little bit of romance and a happy ending. It also made me think about life and the Bible in ways I hadn't before, which to me always makes a really good book.
The only thing I had an issue with was the fact that it was an epistolary novel and it had so few breaks. Sometimes it would get very hard to follow, especially towards the end of the book when Lila is remembering her time in St. Louis. Because of the language style and the way the author wrote dialogue, memories vs. present day could get a little jumbled. I think if the author wrote in this particular style again, more breaks in the novel would help a lot.
