I did not read the two earlier books in the Gilead series but this book seems to stand on its own. Lila's story is quite compelling and is not presented in chronological order. The book opens with Lila as a toddler who has been severely mistreated. She comes into Gilead as a young woman on her own who seeks temporary shelter from the rain in a church. She ends up falling in love with the minister of the church, a man who is much older than she. The book has no chapter breaks, it is just one long story, as if someone is telling it to you. Lila remains strongly independent and it was her insights that I enjoyed the most in this book.

This might be my favorite Gilead novel. Lila is so much deeper and more complex than I have her credit for in earlier books.
Once, after finishing a movie with my family, I remember my grandfather said he didn’t understand it, and my grandmother’s retort was that was because he wasn’t deep enough. I think this may have been a little like that for me...

Beautiful book. Not my favorite of hers, which says a lot given how much I liked it. Robinson is a hell of a writer who helps me to consider all of the wonder that makes up this ordinary life.
