I enjoyed it. The author is good at creating twists and keeping the reader's attention; I really struggled to put my book down! The male protagonist/love interest kind of subverted the stereotype for the YA romantasy genre, but I couldn't say the same for the female protagonist. If you like Sarah J. Maas, you'll probably be a fan of this book.

The romance could have been paced a bit slower, but that's only my preference. It still took a while to develop compared to other books. And they had a very good dynamic together. The plot, stakes, and their own arcs wove well into their love story for a satisfying and captivating journey from beginning to completion.

If you're after a fun read with a mix of romance, drama, magic, and adventure, then this is right for you.

Shout out to my friend Katelyn for recommending this, she was so right. What a fun ride! This is such a good example of YA Fantasy Romance tropes, edgy imagery, and angst done well. Is this high-brow literature? No. Are some elements ridiculous? Yes. This is a book best enjoyed if you can channel your teenage rebel brain and not take it too seriously. The book doesn't seem to take itself that seriously, either. It feels like if the author had to make a decision, they choose based on what seemed the most entertaining, and for my reading experience that was not a bad thing. The romantic leads were nicely matched with each other, clearly they both needed to grow, and their complimentary strengths and weaknesses would push each other to grow in the best directions. I thought the supporting characters were compelling as well. I had a blast listening to this audiobook. I rarely want to jump into a sequel when I finish the first book of a series, even if I liked it, but I actually do want to just keep reading this story. (TBD if I actually will though 😛)

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the vibe of the world, a sort of Renaissance French witches vs religious witch hunters story. I disliked the male mc at first but as his character developed, he started growing on me. The main plot was a bit predictable, but there were still some plot twists I didn't see coming. I'm curious about the rest of the series!

Overall a nice story, but it lacked some depth and world building in the beginning of the story. I also had to reread paragraphs to understand the story. And also the end was
a bit anticlimactic.
