Taking forced proximity to the extreme, I see.

In this prequel novella of the Mistress series, we join journalism student Blair Chase and CEO Madison Sloane in the five-hour enduring entrapment in an elevator. One got burning questions and a snack bar, the other got a bottle of expensive wine and a heavy case of claustrophobia. They might bicker. They might kiss. They might fuck. They might do it all together.

It is a novella, so the story happens quickly. Some might find the romance rushed, others may argue it was to be expected from a book with only 110 pages. But it didn't particularly bother me, luckily. You're in an elevator, you're locked up, you're dangling who-knows-how-many feet above the ground, your emotions are all over the place and things happen. If I thought I could die any moment, I too would like to kiss the pretty girl I'm locked up with.

And the book is not all lemons and lime. Madison is a relatively completely closed-off person. She suffers from claustrophobia, as mentioned. This is a pretty important element of the plot, as it prods Blair to keep asking questions like the journalism student she is. We are quickly delving into Madison's backstory, which she explains to Blair as she starts trusting her more. It always makes me happy when erotic romance books still have big parts that aren't just doing the deed but also balanced with emotional moments and plots like in Laid Bare.

Only thing I didn't enjoy fully was how the power dynamics was written. I can't exactly put my finger on it, and it wasn't really a problem to me, but I do feel like I should write it down anyways.

Can't wait until the copy of Ensnared Hearts I ordered gets delivered, very excited to read the rest of the series!
