I LOVE India Knight. She is such fun to read, so personable and so present on every page. It is ten years old now, this book, and yet seems so absolutely prescient...

Brilliant eye-opener on over-spending and shows just how easy it can be to take back control by being thrifty and Environmentally sound. Has opened up the world of thrift to me and I'll be making a lot more of my own cleaning products etc. Well worth the read :) Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Unsurprisingly, a very middle class approach to spending less money. At one point in the book, I was advised to buy a karaoke machine because it pays off when you throw enough parties with it. Makes much more thrifty, frugal sense than renting a karaoke machine! In defence of the author, she did make it clear that she was coming at this from the perspective of a middle class woman but I can't say acknowledging your bias necessarily outweighs how tone deaf your content is. Some of the sections are lovely (if a bit idealistic) and talk about community building in your neighbourhood. Some of the sections are great and discuss the issues with fast fashion etc but it was nothing new. The final straw for me was the final chapter on 'Emotional Thrift' which essentially said how we should return to stiff upper lip Britain and stop whining about our problems. She says everyone has problems and she misses the days where people just said 'Fine, thank you' in response to 'How are you?' rather than burdening her with their issues. I just think that's inappropriate when you're writing a book to "help" people in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis especially after having discussed the importance of community and people looking out for each other.

However, to end this review on a somewhat positive note: I learned about mortgages which is something I'll never have given the state of the economy (Sorry, is that too whiney India Knight?) but at least now I know for if I ever do.

Re-read this book - still some great ideas but slightly dated now.

informative

I found this quite outdated and common-sense. I think for some people this would be good, I mean, he book itself is okay, but it just isn't useful for me at all.

This actually hasn't aged particularly well. I didn't find it terrible helpful, and it was full of links which didn't work any more. But money saving expert is still going strong!
