Oh boy, I have complicated feelings about this book.
Zippy is in her early twenties and she works for the luxury department store, IMagnin, in downtown San Francisco. She doesn't know her dad and her mom is married to a guy who just had work place accident where he lost his fingers. Her mom and stepdad drink a bit too much and can't save money to help themselves. Zippy, who has recently moved in with a roommate and who is struggling to make it on her own, feels the need to help her mom, a pressure that builds during the entire story.
Zippy may not have the money to shop where she works, but she is a natural salesperson. She understand fashion and customer service. She is less skilled in understanding people and her sweet naïveté makes her a target for older, jealous coworkers.
I could relate to so much of this story and Zippy. I understood her desire to help others and to be fair. Even though she desperately needs money, she morally will not poach customers and had a desire to work as a team with the coworker that shows her kindness. Zippy wants to succeed, but she also wants others to succeed. I worked at a Nordstrom and I could see the coworker and customer stereotypes that were presented in the story. These people rang true to my experience.
I did find Zippy to be a little too naive, impossibly naive.
Generally, I enjoyed the story and would read this author again. I also liked that it is set in the 1980's!
SPOILER = I was also really bothered by the paper dolls. I kept thinking this was going to turn into a negative plot point, but it doesn't. It was like the concept of Chekhov's Gun. I thought it was impossible that the could fool around at work with the paper dolls, making fun of people and it not backfire on them. I was waiting for this the entire story with no payoff. I felt misled, also, it was a bit weird.

It was okay. The audio narration was well done. My main issue was the strong religious overtone (co-worker of the MC, praying at work, etc) which put me off.
