I always had heard what an elegant writer Marilynne Robinson was -- now I can confirm it! This book moves slowly, but the seemingly effortless beauty of the writing kept me engaged with the story of Ruth and the steady destabilization of her world. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a serious read.

This was a reread for me -- out of all the books I've ever read, this is my all time favourite. The way Marilynne Robinson writes is sacred and poignant, I'm always so blown away by her descriptions.

This story of two sisters growing up as outsiders in a small town under the care of their eccentric aunt manages to be playful while at the same time searching. The loss of their mother, who took her own life, is present throughout; there's a longing for her underneath everything else. In its sadness and beauty this book seems to transcend others. Each time I reread it I am stunned by it again.

I wanted to like this more than I actually did.

Another favourite read for the third time, possibly diminishing returns on this one though. A very quiet book, all dreamlike prose and subtle rejections of assimilation, respectability, family etc. Still pretty stunning and lovely. Fingerbone is such an evocative place name, too.

Reading this was a beautiful and cathartic experience. I didn’t realize how much I needed it until I had finished.
