This book covered so much and is difficult to digest and put into one picture. The story of Jakub's adventure into space was against the backdrop of his childhood in the post war world of Czech Republic in the political troubles and his own family struggles. The love for his wife Lenka kept him going until the heartbreak of losing her without knowing why. Then the mystery hallucination of the disformed alien amongst the purple Chopra with his death imminent. Yet the story of his rescue and the journey back to his childhood home was more about the discovery of losing and slowly reminding himself of who he was also echoed how precious and extraordinary humanity is.

Kalfar has a gift for imagery, for transporting a reader to a place she has never been. I fell in love with Prague while reading this book. The writing is stunning; understated and yet profound.

I wish I had picked this one up, mmm, maybe like six months from now. The themes of the trajectory of one’s life moved me in ways I don’t quite understand, and I think that’s because I’m in a weird post-2018 crossroads at the moment. I think I’d like to read it again in a year, see if I can make sense of all the feelings I have about this book.

Still... I kind of already wanna get “How unlikely! Yet here we are.” tattooed over my heart.

I watch the Netflix movie first. It was such a strange, slow movie and yet I couldn't stop thinking about it. I decided to borrow the book from the library. The Book was so much better than the movie... Sorry Adam Sandler. I can't stop thinking about this story. It's so strange and so interesting. The writing is, in my opinion, beautiful, thought provoking.
