I read this entirely on the strength of Adam's review. I had never heard of Barry Sonnenfeld. I kinda enjoyed Men in Black, and I like the Coen Brothers as much as the next guy. But true to Adam's review, the book is hilarious. It is basically like listening to a very long, increasingly incredible episode of This American Life.

As wild and witty as the man himself. This is what autobiographies should be.

I’ve heard Barry a few times on NPR, and he is always hilarious and has the best stories. Because of those laugh out loud interviews that I thought I'd give this book a read. His memoir opens very strong. I  relished in all the stories involving his family, especially his parents. He paints them as very colorful characters and isn’t afraid to spill family drama. I love hearing about dysfunctional families because I, too, come from one of those. For me, the book starts to lose some steam as it slowly evolves into his film career. There are some nuggets of funny stories in regards to his relationships and/or interactions with various Hollywood moguls and actors, but a lot of it is seeped in technical jargon, and name dropping, which I didn’t care for. Barry is unapologetically himself. He really opens up about the good, the bad and the dark and for that I do admire him, but I’m afraid to admit I found myself bored in some sections of the book.

What a ride. I wish it had more on the Coens and Men in Black (possibly my favorite comedy of the last 30 years?) but it’s still a strong recommendation in my book.
