Like all of the other stories written by Christina Henry, this one is no let down. I absolutely adored this book and read it pretty much without putting it down. It has a beautiful magic to it, with a main character who is so easily warmed up to and I was enchanted by the idea of her mermaid.

The story of a mermaid who ventures out of the sea and onto land, with a curiosity of the humans and the world which she wants to explore finds her in an uneasy alliance between herself and PT Barnum (who is written extremely well, a character not quite a villain but certainly no angel) developing into a story of love and romance - this book has everything.

I loved how it was written and had a lovely feel good factor and was just generally so nice to read. One of my favourites of her books!

I enjoyed this BUT I was expecting a lot more classic Horror from Henry so it felt like a bit of a disappointment. I like how Henry essentially took a historic figure and used it for a basis of her own fantasy, which was fun to read and interesting as a lens to look at Henry's reflections on society and humanity.

After reading Alice and the Lost Boys I imagined The Mermaid would be the re-telling of Ariel. It wasn't.

The Mermaid is the story of Amelia who after finding love with a seaman, while he grows old she stays young. Word of this spreads from town to town before reaching the ears of P. T. Barnum who wants Amelia to be the star attraction for his show.

Amelia is a strong woman who faces life head on with whatever challenge she faces but I didn't love her like I did Alice.

Unlike Alice and the Lost Boys it wasn't gripping, gritty or dark.

It was an enjoyable ok read.

A fantastical retelling of sorts about the feejee mermaid that PT Barnum had in his museum, but in this story the mermaid is real… I liked the book, and made me want to watch The Greatest Showman again lol

I enjoyed this book - a retelling of The Little Mermaid. I liked the introduction of PT Barnum and his circus though I fully expected him to be more villainous and try to force Amelia to stay.
