This was actually quite an interesting take on the story of The Little Mermaid, placing her alongside the greatest con-man to have ever walked the earth and showing how they could have worked together.

I did like the idea that Amelia was going around and making her own choices here, there and everywhere but still butting up against how the society of the day expected her to act. And it was fun to see how someone who has no idea about societal norms reacted to them. There were lots of moments where there was a real feminist message being portrayed, and it was interesting to see that coming from the thoughts of something so non-human.

While I’m not sure I’ll be reaching for another Henry book, I enjoyed this one and it was a fast, fun read.

3.5

I was Interested in this... Its not a retelling Per se but has aspects that are....

It wasn't the usual grey Christina Henry writes but i still enjoyed it enough

Of all of Christina Henry’s books that I’ve read, this has been my least favorite. That’s not to say that it wasn’t good or that I didn’t enjoy it, it just was a little duller by comparison. Perhaps it’s because it isn’t horror, which all the other Henry books I’ve read have been. But it was a cute story and mermaid books will always have a special place in my heart. The story was a little disjointed at parts but overall, fairly entertaining.

I loved the prose and the fairytale-ish feel to this story. The premise of the plot was interesting and engaging, however I felt the last twenty percent was lacking and the conclusion was a bit of a let down.

Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable read if anyone fancies a sweet original mermaid story.
