I loved the whole concept of the story and the fine line between reality and fantasy, making the existence of mermaids seem almost possible, for me at least. I really liked the messages of the book:
- it's important to be curious, even if it can be risky and uncomfortable
- you can fall in love with someone who in theory is extremely different from you,
- it's okay to be grieving in your own way for as long as you need but it's also okay to get over the pain with time
- and you can love someone again even after a very big love.
And what I love the most, probably, is how honest Amelia is and how much she cares about other humans, even though most people treat her like an animal unworthy of any consideration. Even though I wasn't a big fan of Levi, I liked how the book ended.

3.5 stars. I liked it enough to give the author the benefit of the doubt, but she could have gone deeper with some of this stuff. I was looking forward to P.T. Barnum as a villain, but he never gets there; he is mildly antagonistic at best. Amelia has too many people on her side right from the start that Barnum's potential for villainy is cut off before it can begin.

I found it a bit heavy-handed with the symbolism, so much that I'm not even sure it's fair to call it symbolism anymore. But the plot was interesting and although I didn't get the dark and creepy book I thought I was getting, it ended up being a hopeful and uplifting story instead.

An interesting read! I enjoyed it, but hated PT Barnum! Really loved Amelia as a strong female lead, and I loved the ending!
