It's quite slow-paced and I didn't like how romance-focused it was at times. Yeah, Amelia's original driving factor was that she wanted to learn more about the human world but I could have done without the romances. But I think Amelia was still a very interesting character and honestly so autistic-coded to me that I ended up really loving her a lot at least and that made the book worthwhile for me.

Hooked (no pun intended). The ending was a little predictable, but an easy and enjoyable read!
This is the third Christina Henry novel that I've read, the first two being The Chronicles of Alice. Unlike The Chronicles of Alice, The Mermaid is NOT a fairy tale retelling. It's a semi-historical novel, retelling the Fiji mermaid hoax.
I liked bits and pieces of the novel - seeing the world through the eyes of Amelia was unique and wonderful. I enjoyed Amelia, Charity, and Caroline. The women and girls in this story are strong and fleshed out (as much as they can be in 316 pages).
The writing was lovely, but the plot felt rather flat. I didn't feel as if much happened. There was a lot of redundancy in the plot, if we're honest. Barnum and his character felt. . .not evil, but not normal. He felt like a by-the-numbers-"evil"-businessman. The love interest and the love story were woefully underdeveloped. A lot of this, as others have said, felt very rushed. The story just wasn't developed enough for me.

Really enjoyed the beginning of the book and also liked the introduction of PT Barnum but felt the ending quite predictable. Different than Christina Henry’s other books but still enjoyed!

I loved it very much. Amelia is such a wonderful main character and her outlook on life and humanity as a whole is so beautiful. She deserves happiness above all else, to not be lonely or displayed as an animal in a cage. The fact that she was able to allow herself to love again is so amazing and that she finally has the child she longed for for so long makes me want to cry.
2.5 stars but rounded it up to 3 for being a very quick read
Having watched The Greatest Showman, you can say that my excitement for the circus and P.T. Barnum type stories are drawing me in. Yet, to be honest, it was not all about P.T. Barnum that drew me to this book but the mermaid aspect as well. It has been a long while since I have read a mermaid story.
Instantly, I was transported back in time and within the pages of this story. Reading how Amelia came to make her way upon land was a very touching story. I mourned with her when her first human husband disappeared and she held hope for him every night by the sea.
Mr. Barnum is the bad guy in this story. Yet, at the same time it was not hard to understand his drive to be a showman. Plus, I think we are all intrigued by things that we can't explain including the mystical. I myself still am a fan of unicorns. The love story between Amelia and Levi was nice.
If you are looking for a gorgeous story filled with love, new chances, character development all wrapped up in a historical fiction, than, look no further then, The Mermaid by Christina Henry. I absolutely loved this book and look forward to reading more like this from Ms. Henry.
