Wasn't my favourite of Christina Henry's books. I don't mind the inclusion of P.T. Barum. The ending was sweet for "the mermaid" and its other main character "Levi".

2.5 ⭐ I liked the beginning and the end but not the middle.

In a realm beneath the waves, resided a mermaid named Amelia. Yet, she yearned for something more than the confines of the sea; her heart craved knowledge of the vast world and its marvels. Thus, she made the bold choice to abandon her aquatic abode and venture onto the land..

This was different to the Christina Henry novels I'm used to and unfortunately the one I liked the least. I felt it dragged quite a bit and found myself getting bored.

However it's still definitely worth reading and I'm glad I did.

Lovely historical fiction about a mermaid who crosses paths with PT Barnum and becomes his prize exhibit.

A mermaid is caught in a fisherman’s net and then released. She falls in love with him and comes ashore, living for many years as his wife and adopting the name Amelia. After her husband dies, word of the Maine mermaid spreads as far as New York City, where PT Barnum is searching for a new attraction for his museum. Amelia agrees to work for Barnum, hoping to gain enough money to travel the world. She is not the docile obedient creature he wants her to be; rather, Amelia sees many conventions, including male superiority, as foolish and refuses to submit. The character of Amelia is a fascinating and endearing one. I was rooting for her and loved the feel of this story.

This is a quick and enjoyable read about what might have been, and I recommend it to readers of fantasy and historical fiction.

"Do not mistake the revelation of my body for the revelation of my heart. My heart keeps its own secrets and they don't belong to you"

Another marvelous work of Henry. Can’t wait for the next one!
mysterious slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No

Wahnsinn.

This book was a very interesting read. It's not as child-like as I thought it would be, but I'm not at all disappointed by that. If anything, I like that it's written as an adult book because it makes it more "real" (more adult esque scenarios)

The only thing that disappointed me was the ending because it seemed rushed and unfinished.
