Overall a nice and easy read. But in my opinion the story took too long to start. More than half way through the book, the excitement came while reading. The plot was predictable. But all in all a quick, easy and enjoyable read before bed.
slow-paced

Christina Henry is honestly one of my favourite authors i think. This one was not my favourite of hers, but i still loved it, it was just different to her usual fairytale retellings. This one was a lot less dark, for one, and it was a rather slow tale (tail, hehe), the writing style, when in the mermaids pov, was wonderfully fairytale-like. It was a beautiful, and sad, tale of humanity as seen through the eyes of a profoundly non-human being, and as with all of this authors books it was nicely feminist.

I've enjoyed the two Christina Henry books I've read already (Lost Boy and The Girl in Red) but this one fell a little more flat for me - I think because it's not exactly a retelling. Doesn't stop me wanting to read more by Christina Henry though.

I really loved this book, I'd been reading a few Little Mermaid retellings lately and I thought this would be another...

But I was pleasantly surprised with it being a blend of the classic mermaid tale, mixed with the Fiji Mermaid and the world of P T Barnum.

My favourite quote

“Humans often valued what they should not, she reflected, and most often they did not value what was right before their eyes.”

Amelia was a great main character, I loved the way she was not going to even try to fit into society and the way that humans think or live.
