I really really loved Macy and Elliot’s overall story but check trigger warnings!

What kept this from being a 5 star rating for me was mostly that I think there was an opportunity for highlighting the importance of how Elliot was not okay and what he went through was SA. The way everything unfolded, the main focus was on Macy’s dad’s death. But like, what happened to Elliot was also not okay and it clearly messed him up afterwards and I think that it could have been handled a bit better.

Wow, where to even begin. I knew that the tone of the book wouldn’t be as lighthearted given that the story starts out with the loss of Macy’s mom, but boy did I not expect for my feels to be hit this hard. I did cry, let’s just say that. Elliot and Macy falling in love was depicted so lovingly and with care that you feel as if you’re watching your next door neighbour’s kids fall in love from your bedroom window.
The pain of their separation and the reasons for it were so raw and completely plausible that I tear up a little just thinking on it. Just wow, the domino effect of one decision, of one mistake could cause grave consequences. I do wish we see more of Ell and Mace’s life together in the end.
Oh yeah, Elliot has definitely been added to my list of ideal type. The straightforward but gentle type.

Just some timeline for myself:
I finished this book at 1:11am (PST) and read more than 80% of it on a 24hr road trip. I read the last 30% on May 31st through out the whole day and only finishing it now as I am writing this. This is mostly so that I can pin point the exact time I am feeling this way after finishing this book.

I read this special edition after absolutely loving the original book. Reading through this book with many questions already answered from the previous read, I fell in love with it all over again. The bonus chapters gave some context/resolution without fleshing everything out. I still don't agree with every choice each character made but this book still devastates me in the most beautiful way whenever I read it.

The depth of feeling in this book stuck me in a way lots of my 5* reads don’t. One of the author’s love for the setting really bled through the pages. The way they captured teenage infatuation and the early, gentle stages of young relationships was brilliant. Grief was a constant companion throughout and I was desperate to find out more about Duncan and the first fallout of Macy and Elliot’s relationship.
