The characters feel developed and had distinct personalities and agency. Really touching relationships at the center and with side characters. A little annoyed with the ending twist but overall a good read. Loved the honest and upfront nature of the characters discussing their emotions and thoughts. Would definitely read again.

  • I had high expectations going into this book - I’d heard people say this is Christina Lauren’s BEST book {I was apprehensive because I have the tendency to have the opposite option of popular books}
  • I had a feeling that this book would be emotional - I wasn’t expecting to be bawling and snotting all over the place with how much I was crying {I physically couldn’t read because it was blurry} Knowing she lost her dad in that way devastated me (I did and did not see it coming
  • This book was devastatingly beautiful and I wish I had of read it in a shorter period - reading motivation was wack this month (Blaming it on exhaustion and post Eras Tour)
  • I think I would’ve loved it more if I had of read it in a shorter period - struggled to connect fully with the characters, but still a 5 star read
  • Loved it more than Josh and Hazel.
  • I wish we saw more of Elliot and Macy being together at the end - I wanted to see ALL of their milestones together
  • Their story reminded me a lot of It ends with us - Lily and Atlas’ story and how they were right person wrong time/ misunderstanding
  • I liked the alternating chapters between past and present - just wish we saw more of the drunken night (was Elliot drugged?)

Wow, where to even begin. I knew that the tone of the book wouldn’t be as lighthearted given that the story starts out with the loss of Macy’s mom, but boy did I not expect for my feels to be hit this hard. I did cry, let’s just say that. Elliot and Macy falling in love was depicted so lovingly and with care that you feel as if you’re watching your next door neighbour’s kids fall in love from your bedroom window.
The pain of their separation and the reasons for it were so raw and completely plausible that I tear up a little just thinking on it. Just wow, the domino effect of one decision, of one mistake could cause grave consequences. I do wish we see more of Ell and Mace’s life together in the end.
Oh yeah, Elliot has definitely been added to my list of ideal type. The straightforward but gentle type.

Just some timeline for myself:
I finished this book at 1:11am (PST) and read more than 80% of it on a 24hr road trip. I read the last 30% on May 31st through out the whole day and only finishing it now as I am writing this. This is mostly so that I can pin point the exact time I am feeling this way after finishing this book.

“I haven't been living without him. I've been merely surviving.”

Second chance love stories are one of my favorite tropes. This story had it in aces. Not only did Macy and Elliot get that second chance, but their love story also survived so many obstacles. I found this to be a very fast read, one that was emotional and kept me craving the next page. Alternating timelines were easy to follow, and the authors really kept you wondering if these two would be able to heal their hearts in time to make it work together. I might not always get a Christina Lauren book read in a timely fashion, but I will always read them.

“His kiss is an aching prayer; devotion pours from him.”

I thought the story was really good and I enjoyed reading the dynamic between reading about the past and present versions of Macy and Elliot. It felt like I grew up with them and experienced their struggles (I loved both of them and loved their love for reading).

While I enjoyed the core part of the story, I felt that the ending was very rushed. It felt like we had just reached the climax, only for the story to declare that it was complete. I went from crying to confusion after realizing the story was done. I feel that Christina Lauren could’ve added more to the revelation part and really tie the loose ends (we did kind of get a closure from the epilogue-ish section but it wasn’t enough to feel complete). The major root of their conflict came and went so fast I wondered if I missed something.

Something I liked about this book was the communication between Macy and Elliot. I liked that they were comfortable enough to communicate with each other and not hold back. Sure it was difficult sometimes, but communication is hard and I respect the fact that they talked. The problem is that they communicate so well sometimes and more often than I’d expect that it felt unnatural. Maybe it’s because I’m used to miscommunication or lack of communication, but the fact that they talked about their feelings and insecurities so often felt so foreign. Honestly I was just shocked. Like even the communication with Sean felt unnatural (if you read the book you’d know what I mean).

Overall the story was really good. Even if the end was rushed, the other parts made it so much worth it. I couldn’t put it down and I fell in love with most of the characters (all of the important ones at least). I would recommend it.
