Review to come. In short, although this was a turning point for the series, I can't recommend this collection.

So I understand that this was formative in creating my favorite DC character ever (Red Hood), but there is something to be said about the cursed nature of voting to kill a child because he wasn't enough like the last child...

After reading A Death in the Family, I know there's a lot of retread in the Batman mythos.

Jason Todd was long dead and buried before I was born or a Batfan, but I feel like it would have had a greater emotional impact if it were Dick Grayson instead. Jason Todd isn't likeable, and never was, it seems due to those voted for his death.

I knew Jason Todd died in a warehouse thanks to Joker's crowbar, but I didn't know about the very political current event aspect of it. Seeing Shiva was interesting considering her daughter Cassidy Cain is well loved currently.

Joker's diplomatic immunity was a bit wasted and if he became an ambassador today, I'm sure they'd milk it for an arc or two, not just blow it on one issue.

Superman was well-used.

I am rating this a little higher because of how revolutionary the concept was, and they kept Jason Todd dead for an eternity in comic book years.

Worth a read, but not a reread.

PS: Joker without the makeup will haunt you.

Also I just now put it together that this was written by Starlin, Marvel Cosmic darling. I think I might look up some more Starlin Batman sometime.

i always hated the art style of this era, especially nightwing. this was more of a "i should finally read this" pickup.
