I love Nesta with my whole entire heart, and this book will make you hate the rest of the inner circle a little bit if you agree.

If you want complex female characters, look here. If you want people reacting to complex female characters with any bit of compassion, don't look here
(except Emerie and Gwyn, who can do no wrong. I would read an entire series about the friendship between these three).

This was great in the way a soap opera is great. The plot (in terms of the larger world’s politics and magic’s role in it) was almost incoherent, but the romance and friendship plots were fun, and I loved the FMCs arc (Nesta is by far the most complex and compelling character in this series now that Feyre and Rhys annoy the hell out of me).

I enjoyed every minute of this book but also suspended the critical thinking part of my brain. When I turn it back on, all of the inconsistencies in characters, magic system, and world building and all the forced plot elements and holes are glaringly obvious. I’m really, really hoping that all these things are intentional and part of some big, elaborate plot that SJM is laying the groundwork for and that will all come together at the end of the series, but at this point that seems unlikely (even tho TOG has shown she’s capable of plotting and writing a great series!) I’d put my money on this just being bad writing and poor series planning.

While the main character, Nesta, had amazing character development, I still did not connect with her or like her has a character. That does not mean that I think this book was written poorly. It was a great book with more spice compared to the others in the series.  I am actually very excited to be caught up in the series now and am looking forward to the next book in the series whenever that comes out.

I’m unsure how to even capture what this book did to my heart. I feel like it is bursting with life, like somehow Nesta finding herself helped me to find myself too, like I also somehow contain the same power within me. It makes me want to train, to live, to fight, to fly, to just experience the world with the people I love.

Again such a fabulous writing by Maas of PTSD, stress after a loss, guilt, depression, anxiety, and so much more. Feeling unworthy of things like love and happiness after we have hurt so many. Finding ourselves again in the chaos of life and loss.

But in addition to the darker and more hopeful parts of this book, there was love and spice, danger and promise of future conflict, and potential to continue seeing the world grow as we fall more in love with this family.

I liked the characters better before I read this book. So much pigheadedness.
